If you are a parent that owns a home with a garage, the last thing you want is the garage door to fall on your child and have him or her be injured by it. You want to make sure that your kids are as safe around the garage door as possible. Here are some tips for making sure that your kids remain safe.

1. Show Your Children the Difference Between a Garage Door Opener and Other Remotes

The first thing that you want to do is make sure that your kids don't mistake your garage door opener for a toy or some other electronic device that they are allowed to use. Garage door openers are not toys because they control something that is extremely heavy and, if used incorrectly, could lead to someone getting injured. If you take a few minutes to make sure that your children are able to identify a garage door opener as opposed to a phone or a television remote, you will know that they understand that they can't play with the garage door opener.

2. Set Up a Safety System

The next thing that you need to do is get your kids set up with a safety system for entering or exiting the garage. For very young children, you might want to make sure that they let you know when they are going into the garage and then immediately let you know when they are leaving the garage so that you don't accidentally close them in. You also might want to get into the habit of blowing a whistle and waiting thirty seconds before closing the garage. You can tell your children that if they hear a whistle, they know to immediately leave the garage and let you know that they are out.

3. Get a Kid-Safe Garage Door

Most garage doors these days come with a safety system that will detect if there is someone underneath the area where the door closes and tells the garage door to stop moving immediately. If you have an older garage door model that doesn't have this safety feature, consider upgrading to one that does as an additional form of protection. This can help set your mind at ease.
